Five more Congressional Gold Medals will be awarded to widows of deceased veterans.

Recently Congress had passed the Congressional Gold Medal for Chinese American WWII Veterans Act, which President Trump signed into law on December 20, 2018 (Public Law 115-337). The Chinese American Citizens Alliance (CACA) created the Chinese American WWII Veterans Recognition Project and had made it their mission to recognize, honor, and celebrate the military service of Chinese Americans who fought in World War II through advocacy, education, and preservation. The recognition of these soldiers’ patriotism, sacrifice, and valor, and others who have yet to be recognized, is long overdue.

Fresno, California, May 25, 2021…California Teaching Fellows Foundation (CTFF), the largest education sector college internship employer, is accepting applications to hire 500+ college students interested in exploring careers in education, and who have a passion for serving the community and its youth. Teaching Fellow positions will serve K-12 school sites transitioning back to in-person learning along with robust support programs for students and educators at over 50 school districts in Fresno, Merced, Madera, Tulare and Kings counties this fall. Professional training for new hires begins early August, with onsite work starting once the new school year begins. Teaching Fellows are paid above minimum wage and receive training, enrichment and valuable school site work experience. Online applications can be found here: www.ctff.us/application.

Driven by its mission to inspire next-generation leaders with a passion for teaching and learning, while positively impacting the lives of youth, CTFF provides important expanded learning support for K-12 students and schools. CTFF connects passionate, diverse and trained Teaching Fellows with school sites to provide supplemental classroom, after school and summer program instruction, tutoring and mentorship.

Teaching Fellow applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of six units at a community college or university and be in good academic standing. Previous classroom experience is not required; CTFF trains each Teaching Fellow to fully prepare them for working directly with school site students, as well as provides site supervisors and reporting measures to help ensure success for all.

“California Teaching Fellows Foundation is committed to developing future teachers and leaders who contribute to positive changes in the lives of students, their schools and their communities,” said Mike Snell, CEO of California Teaching Fellows Foundation. “The work of our Teaching Fellows is not only important to the primary and secondary students they work with, but for their own personal and professional growth. While we look to open the door for a career pathway into education, all our Teaching Fellows regardless of career path will develop key leadership, organizational and interpersonal communication skills that will serve them into the future.”

Teaching Fellows are provided with 32 hours of paid professional development coursework annually, allowing them to continually learn and improve their skills in areas like tutoring, classroom management, and creatively engaging students in learning activities. They also have access to its Dream Initiative that provides additional levels of support to Teaching Fellows, many of whom are first-generation college students, to keep them on the path to graduation, career and life success.

“The Teaching Fellows Scholarship Program has been a critical part of my success as an educator. Now, I am a high school teacher of 10+ years in my hometown of Sanger, CA and currently serve as the Board Chairperson for the foundation that poured into me as a college student,” said Donato Mireles.

In addition to providing approximately 2,000 Teaching Fellows annually to 300+ school sites and programs to supplement classroom, after school and summer program instruction – CTFF also offers independent tutoring services for students who need additional hours of instruction and help on homework through its newly launched platform, My Fellow Tutor. These services can be utilized directly by parents or through participating school districts.

About California Teaching Fellows Foundation (CTFF)

California Teaching Fellows was initiated at Fresno State’s Kremen School of Education & Human Development in 1999 to provide paid early field experience for future teachers that would enhance teacher preparation. Then in 2006, the California Teaching Fellows Foundation was founded as a 501 (c) (3) to further grow the program to meet increasing requests from school districts for expanded learning support. Now CTFF partners with over 50 school districts to staff programs at more than 300 K-12 school sites.

CTFF employs nearly 2,000 college students in Tulare, Kings, Fresno, Madera and Merced counties annually to serve more than 30,000 K-12 students with supplemental classroom, after school and summer program instruction, tutoring and mentorship. CTFF, the largest education sector college Teaching Fellow employer in the Central Valley, provides valuable work experience, professional and personal development through a variety of resources, including the Dream Initiative. Since 2006, hundreds of Teaching Fellows have graduated from its program to become educators in the Central Valley. CTFF continues to play a critical role in helping combat the ongoing teacher shortage crisis in California, by inspiring and exposing college students to careers in education. For more information on California Teaching Fellows Foundations visit www.ctff.us.

The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees has appointed Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, Ph.D., to serve as the ninth president of California State University, Fresno. Jiménez-Sandoval currently serves as interim president of Fresno State.

“From providing world-class, transformational educational opportunities, to conducting cutting-edge research, to uniting our entire community in support of athletic teams, Fresno State makes a profound impact on the entire Central Valley,” said Jiménez-Sandoval. “It is an honor to be chosen to lead this premier university, which opens doors of opportunities for our talented students and improves the quality of life for everyone in the Valley. I look forward to working together with our dynamic faculty, committed staff, talented students, and innovative community partners to increase the life-changing opportunities that a Fresno State education provides.”

“Dr. Jiménez-Sandoval has an exciting vision for the future of the university while having gained immeasurable institutional knowledge and developed outstanding relationships throughout the campus and community over his many years of service to Fresno State,” said CSU Trustee Jane Carney, chair of the Fresno State search committee.

Jiménez-Sandoval has a deep history with Fresno State and an even longer association with the Central Valley. He first joined the university as a member of the faculty in 2000. Over two decades of service, he has served as professor of Spanish and Portuguese, coordinator of the Spanish master of arts degree, chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literature, interim associate dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, and provost.

His relation to the Central Valley reaches back to his early years, as he grew up in nearby Fowler after his family moved to the area from Mexico and maintained the family farm. He and his wife, Dr. Mariana Anagnostopoulos, a member of the Fresno State Philosophy department faculty, are proud parents of two sons, Arion and Leo.

Jiménez-Sandoval graduated cum laude with bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and History from the University of California, Irvine, where he also earned his Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese literature. In addition, he has professional certificates in critical theory from Cornell University, in Spanish art history from Escuela de Arte y Antigüedades de Madrid (Spain), and in Portuguese language and culture from Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal).

Jiménez-Sandoval will immediately assume the campus presidency.

Fresno, CA – Vinci Ricchiuti has been announced as the 2021 recipient of the Leon S. Peters Award by the Fresno Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Ricchiuti was chosen for the award based on outstanding leadership through devotion of her philanthropic efforts to better the community. The selection of this prestigious honor is based upon the recipient’s accomplishments, personal and public service, which must exemplify the spirit of an enlightened, responsible free enterprise system.

“Vinci Ricchiuti has followed closely in the footsteps of Mr. Peters.” said Chamber President/CEO, Scott Miller. “Her love of this community is evident through her devotion of time, talent and treasure to so many valley institutions and causes. We couldn’t be more excited to add her to the list of very deserving recipients!”
