TULARE – Through a grant awarded to Tulare Joint Union High School District, junior high and high school students will be able to apply for paid internships in the medical field. This award was funded through the State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, Health Careers Training Program grant.

The Tulare Health Careers Academy is the district’s medical magnet program that provides exemplary and innovative educational opportunities for students grades 7-14 who are pursuing a healthcare career. The Career Technical Education (CTE) program within the academy offers a recommended sequence of courses leading to entry level, technical, and professional certificates, and medical degrees. This is accomplished through extensive collaboration with secondary schools, Regional Occupation Programs (ROP), post-secondary schools, and industry partnerships.

“The Central Valley has a need for more medical professionals, and we have many students with a great amount of potential,” commented Dr. Sarah Koligian, superintendent for Tulare Joint Union High School District. “This is a great opportunity for 55 of our academy students to experience the medical field firsthand, and build their resume for future endeavors. It is programs like this that get our students ready for careers and college.”

Tulare Joint Union High School District has many partners in this project, including Tulare Regional Medical Center, Tulare Community Health Clinic, College of the Sequoias, Porterville College, and San Joaquin Valley College.
