FRESNO – The number of arriving and departing passengers that used Fresno Yosemite International Airport in 2013 was the highest ever at 1,401,582. This exceeded the previous record of 1,318,493 set in 2007 by 6.3%. This unprecedented growth is a result of the addition of new destinations, the introduction of larger aircraft, and a sustained economic recovery, all of which has led to strong bookings on each of the 10 airlines serving Fresno Yosemite.

During 2013, airlines serving Fresno Yosemite provided 33,608 additional seats as compared to 2012, a 4.1% year-over-year increase. As these additional seats were added into our market they got filled. With an average load factor of 82% (percentage of available seats filled) the demand is strong, which is a reflection of the sustained economic recovery in our region.

Contributing to this growth was; the introduction of larger aircraft by US Airways and Aeromexico, new air service last summer to Honolulu with Allegiant Air, twice daily service to San Diego with Alaska Airlines, the launch of Frontier’s non-stop service to Denver as well as new seasonal service to Morelia, Mexico operated by Aeromexico.

The increase in available seats and new destinations contributes significantly to maintaining competitive airfares through Fresno Yosemite. Passengers are realizing that with advanced booking, they can benefit from a variety of travel options stimulated by competitive airfares. “We are fortunate to have multiple air carriers serving a number of large airline hubs, which in turn provides good connectivity to major destinations throughout the world. In today’s highly competitive aviation industry, that connectivity is key for an airport our size,” Director of Aviation Kevin Meikle said.

This trend is expected to continue into 2014. The Central California region will benefit from the return of weekly, non-stop service to Honolulu on Allegiant Air this June, and Aeromexico has committed to growing the Morelia service by starting monthly flights to that region. “As the airlines respond to our economic growth, Fresno Yosemite is poised to accommodate the increased demand for the region,” Meikle said.
