New Selma Arts Center Ribbon Cutting is Aug. 21

SELMA – Selma City leaders will open the first new cultural arts facility in Fresno County in recent years when the new Selma Arts Center is dedicated.  The official ribbon cutting, and reception will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m.  The new Arts Center is located at 1935 High St. in Selma.

“We are excited to open our new arts facility in Selma.  It is the culmination of years of hard work by many community members,” said Selma Mayor Kenneth Grey.  “I am happy to say that the building will be paid for on day one.”

The building is 12,080 square feet, with two levels.  The main level is 6,530 square feet, the mezzanine is 1,600 square feet, while the basement is 3,950 square feet.  The main floor includes the lobby, theater and stage, loading area and bathrooms.  The mezzanine level includes the technical booth which features state of the art lighting and sound.  The basement level will be used for storage of equipment and costumes.

The Arts Center was designed by Dyson, Siegrist, Janzen (DSJ) Architects.  Arthur Dyson, Principal has experience working on such facilities as the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Marin County Civic Center and local projects that include the Woodward Park Library.  Dyson was recently featured on the Home & Garden Network for his design of the Hilton Estate in Florida.

General contractor on the project is Lewis C. Nelson & Sons Construction of Selma.  They have experience building numerous public facilities throughout the state.  Some of the projects they have worked on include Yosemite Visitors Center, Wasco State Prison, CSU Fresno Student Recreation Center, CSU Fresno Science II & Psychology Building, Sunnyside High School, Buchanan High School and Football Stadium, Chowchilla Prison Housing, Mendota Federal Prison, Shaver Lake Service Center and many others.

There are a number of events already scheduled for the Center, including the opening production, “The Sound of Music,” which will run from Sept. 14 through Sept. 29.  Other events scheduled include the youth performing arts program Cool Kids Players which will present “Beauty and The Beast” from Oct. 14 to 23.  A new musical event is the Latino Music Series, which will run one Friday a month from November 2013 to April 2014.  Closing out 2013 will be the Raisin Cain Players Best Christmas Pageant Ever from December 5 to 14, 2013, as well as a special holiday concert by the Joe Lenigan Band on December 6, 2013.
