VISALIA – Kaweah Delta Health Care District has received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for its fourth Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program.

In November, Kaweah Delta received accreditation for its Transitional Year Program. This one-year residency will orient physicians to the practice of medicine generally as they pursue a subspecialty residency in fields such as physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, or radiation oncology. This program will welcome its first class in July 2015 under the leadership of Lori Winston, MD.

The accreditation will allow the program, which is affiliated with UC Irvine, to begin recruiting physicians who have recently completed medical school and have received doctoral degrees in medicine. To select its resident physicians, Kaweah Delta will participate in The National Resident Matching Program. The matching program will provide Kaweah Delta with up to 600-700 applications from interested medical students and recent medical school graduates.

In October, Kaweah Delta began interviews for its first class of resident physicians for its Psychiatry Residency program, which will begin in 2014. Interviews are also underway for the second class of resident physicians for Kaweah Delta’s emergency and family medicine programs. Matches will be announced in March.

Earlier this year, Kaweah Delta established GME residency training programs in the areas of Family Practice and Emergency Medicine. In 2014, Kaweah Delta will begin its Psychiatry Residency Program, followed by the General Surgery Program. The five residency programs will bring physicians who have recently graduated medical school to Tulare County to complete training in their respective specialties. It is estimated that between 40-50% of the physicians that train in Tulare County through the GME programs will remain and practice in the Visalia area.
