Horstmann Announced as 2013 Leon S. Peters Award Winner

FRESNO – Longtime community supporter John E. Horstmann received a surprise Wednesday afternoon at The Downtown Club in Fresno when he was announced as the recipient of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Leon S. Peters Award.

Horstmann learned of his honor in front of a group of many of his family and friends, including son John Horstmann and daughter Katherine Horstmann-Huebert.

“It’s a shock,” Horstmann said.  “I’ve been really fortunate, and it’s been a real honor for me to be involved in the community.”

Horstmann has been involved in the insurance and financial industry since 1958, and is a Life and Qualifying Member of the Million Dollar Round Table, a Charter Member of New York Life Insurance Chairman’s Council, and a member of the International Association for Financial Planning.

Over the years, his community service has included being past chairman of the St. Agnes Medical Center Foundation, trustee emeritus of Saint Agnes Medical Center, being active on the foundation board of governors at California State University, Fresno, past president of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, member of the board of directors for the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, and an outstanding volunteer fundraiser for the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

 

 

Some of Horstmann’s past honors have been Fresno Life Underwriters Association’s Man of the Year in 1990, the California Family Business Award winner in 1999, the Hall of Fame for Excellence in Business Award in 2001, and Fresno State’s Top Dog Award recipient in 2008.  He is a graduate of California State University, Fresno, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing.  He is also a Chartered Life Underwriter and a Chartered Financial Consultant.

“John Horstmann’s contribution to his industry and our community has been exemplary,” said Al Smith, president and CEO of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce.  “When the Leon S. Peters Award was designed, it was tailor made for leaders like John.  Leon would be proud.”
