Fresno Airport Completes Major Airfield Improvements

FRESNO – Significant long-range airfield enhancements to the secondary runway and reconstruction of several commercial aircraft ramp areas have been completed at Fresno Yosemite International Airport.  The $35 million infrastructure improvements will enhance safety, accommodate increased capacity and minimize the airport’s environmental footprint, all at no cost to the Airport or the City of Fresno.

The widened and lengthened secondary runway will enable operation to continue during times when the primary runway is out of service due to maintenance, construction, or is occupied by other aircraft. In addition, having two fully capable runways provides the option to operate one runway for flight arrivals and the other runway for flight departures.

The expansion further supports Fresno Yosemite International’s sustainability efforts by reducing aircraft taxi times from the main concourse, resulting in less aircraft fuel usage.   Other sustainability efforts incorporated into both projects included supporting the use of recycled material, the installation of LED lighting systems, and upgrades to storm water drainage systems.

The installation of black vinyl coated chain link fencing along the Airport’s Chestnut Avenues perimeter provides increased security and unobstructed views of the airfield; showcasing the impressive results of the airfield enhancements.

“The magnitude of both projects demonstrates the Airport’s significance as a leading economic engine for the region,” said Interim Director of Aviation Kevin Meikle.  “In addition to the jobs that were created during construction, the improvements position the Airport to support future growth resulting in further economic benefits.”

95 percent of the funding for both projects came from Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program grants.  The remaining five percent was paid for using matching Measure C Regional Transportation funds. Combined, the two projects generated nearly 500 local construction related jobs.
