FRESNO, CA – Mayor Ashley Swearengin today joined City leaders, staff and hundreds of supporters in downtown Fresno to officially break ground on the Fulton Mall Reconstruction Project, which will restore two-way traffic to the heart of downtown Fresno. The event, which was televised live on the Community Media Access Collaborative (CMAC) government affairs channel, celebrated the start of a dramatic facelift for the six-block-long thoroughfare after years of discussion and debate.

The Fresno City Council voted in February 2014 to reopen the mall to automobile traffic, and on December 3, 2015, a six-to-one vote by the Council awarded a $22.4 million contract to American Paving, a local company, which will now begin construction.

Mayor Swearengin remarked, “Today we break ground for the future of our downtown and our city. In about 400 days we will be back here to cut a ribbon that will welcome new customers, expand businesses and encourage new investment. You will remember this day as a turning point. This is our turn for optimism and to celebrate the hard work and perseverance of so many dedicated people.”

The project will reconstruct the Fulton Mall in downtown Fresno as a complete street by reintroducing vehicle traffic lanes over the existing pedestrian mall. The reconstruction would occur over 11 city blocks and include bicycle and pedestrian accommodations and streetscape improvement elements. Contrary to concerns raised by opponents to the City’s plans, the project includes the conservation and reinstallation of all of the existing art pieces on the Mall and reconstruction of many of the Mall’s key features such as the water fountains.

In May 2014, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), acting on behalf of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), approved federal funds for a project to reintroduce vehicular traffic to the Fulton Mall. City Council approved.

A page has been added to the City of Fresno’s website that provides details on the Fulton Mall Reconstruction Project and will also allow visitors to follow the progress of construction along Fulton Street.
