FRESNO, CA – Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo’s 3rd Year Comprehensive Design Studio students will be presenting their culminating work to the Fresno community on Thursday, June 7 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at The Downtown Club in downtown Fresno.

17 students from Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo’s 3rd Year Comprehensive Design Studio present their culminating work, design projects centered around Downtown Fresno and High Speed Rail Station.

The Comprehensive Design Studio at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo partnered with Darden Architects, ZGF Architects, LPA, Flag Architects, WRNS and Duy Tan University to design nine projects around the new High Speed Rail Station Area in downtown Fresno. As part of their studio, students were asked to propose projects that would address the current conditions and future potential of the culturally rich community and the epicenter of the fifth largest economy in the world. “Fresno, one the fastest growing cities in the state, plays a pivotal role in feeding the nation, has one of the highest childhood poverty rates, and the poorest air quality,” says Stacey White, Cal Poly faculty.

The students first traveled to Fresno in early 2018 to showcase their projects and receive feedback from local architects and community members regarding their designs for downtown Fresno. The project types include: Performing Arts Center, STEAM High School, Recreation and Wellness Center, Medical Simulation Building, Ag Research Building, Retail/Clothing Design Center, and Children’s Preschool. With the conclusion of their Design Studio, the students have been invited back to reveal the final designs to the Fresno community.

“Darden Architects is pleased to support these students in developing unique ideas for our Fresno Downtown. We are honored that they would take time to educate themselves about the challenges and opportunities that our community presents, and employ their talent and skill to respond with such thoughtful architectural concepts. We look forward to the event on Thursday. This is a chance to see the culmination of months of study and hard work. Special thanks to the Downtown Fresno Partnership, the Downtown Club, Cal Poly SLO and Professor Stacey White.” – Phil Dietz, Darden Architects.

The exhibits presented at The Downtown Club event on Thursday will include a site model, nine large-scale building section models, and two posters per project. The 17 Design Studio students will be onsite to explain their projects and answer questions.
