For Casey Hawkins, some of his fondest childhood memories are of trips with his family to visit Yosemite National Park from their home in San Diego. In 2012, he and his wife, Lindsay, decided to leave behind the crowds of southern California and take their young daughter to live in the small mountain town of Oakhurst.
An entrepreneur with a background in finance and marketing, Hawkins saw that there was a need in the community for the very business he hoped to start – a microbrewery that produced exceptional craft beer, serving it on premises and eventually moving into distribution. Work began in spring of 2012 to make this dream a reality. He and his wife and business partner, Lindsay, found a great location – an old car dealership that they spent the next year remodeling to include a brew house, along with a commercial kitchen, bar and dining area. Using exclusively local contractors, the nearly 3,000 square foot building which sits on famous Highway 49, was transformed into a fun, sophisticated, classic California brewpub.
Having assembled a top-notch team of nearly 30 individuals, including Brewmaster Rick Boucke and Chef Dawn Pliche, South Gate Brewing Company opened doors to the public in May 2013. Thanks to Hawkins’ tireless efforts and dedication to his vision, less than 6 months later, South Gate beer is currently available at 6 locations and the Brewpub is a beloved gathering place that continues to gain more enthusiastic fans each day.
