FRESNO – Fresno City Council President Blong Xiong has officially announced the launch of his campaign for Fresno County Supervisor, District 1, and will file papers at noon today as he launches his June 2014 campaign.

District 1 includes Fresno’s West Side and the towns of Kerman. Firebaugh, Mendota and San Joaquin.  Xiong was first elected to represent District 1 on the Fresno City Council in 2007, and was re-elected in 2011.  He is the first Asian-American elected to the council, and the first Hmong-American council member elected in the state of California.

“As supervisor, I will continue to be committed to working with state and federal officials to bring jobs and economic prosperity to Fresno County; supporting San Joaquin Valley agriculture and touting the crucial role we play in feeding California and the world; making sure our communities receive their fair share of state and federal resources; and fighting to keep our neighborhoods, schools and business districts safe from drugs and gangs.”

Xiong was born in Laos on November 3, 1969 and is one of seven children.  When the country fell to the Communists, five-year-old Xiong and his family fled into Thailand in makeshift boats. After spending some time in a Thai refugee camp, the family immigrated to the United States, settling first in Missouri then Kansas, Wisconsin and finally in California in 1991.

Xiong went on to earn a B.S. in Business Administration from Marian College of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and an M.B.A. from National University.  Starting out in his family’s grocery business, Xiong obtained his real estate broker’s license and later became an investigator with the Fresno County Public Defender’s office.

Prior to his election to office, Xiong served as deputy director for the non-profit Fresno Center for New Americans, which assists immigrants and refugees in transitioning to American society.

Xiong was appointed by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve on the board of the California Volunteer Commission. He has also served on the Workforce Investment Board, the Southeast Asian Educational Council, and the Rail Consolidation Committee.

Xiong lives in Fresno with his wife, Maila Yang, and their dog, Maximus.
