Selma Obstetrics Services to Move to Reedley

SELMA / REEDLEY – To address a persistent decline in newborn deliveries at Adventist Medical Center – Selma and provide expectant mothers with large, private rooms, Adventist Health is moving its hospital obstetrics services to Adventist Medical Center in Reedley on June 1, 2014.

In addition, gastrointestinal procedures and general surgeries were moved from the Reedley hospital to Selma on Nov. 15 as the hospital prepares to upgrade its surgical suites.

“These were difficult decisions, but I’m grateful that we have two hospital teams in the same area who are committed to providing the best care for our patients,” said Denyse Bales-Chubb, vice president and administrator for the Selma and Reedley hospitals. “Our main objective through these transitions is to minimize the impact on our patients, employees and physicians.”

The Selma move will affect about 66 deliveries a month, 37% of which are to Selma mothers, and 26 staff members, all of whom will be offered other job opportunities within Adventist Health / Central Valley Network, including at the Reedley Family Birth Center. About 63% of deliveries in Selma are to mothers who live in other nearby communities.

The Reedley move affects a total of 52 patients a month, including colonoscopies and other gastrointestinal procedures as well as some general surgeries. Because the Reedley and Selma surgical teams have been working together since the Reedley hospital joined Adventist Health in 2011, surgery positions were not affected in the move.

In addition to improving patients’ experience, the Selma obstetrics move addresses a persistent decline in deliveries at the hospital, which has seen the number of deliveries fall from 100 in 2009 to 66 currently, causing financial challenges. It also will open up space for future expansion opportunities.

“Expanding services in Selma and Reedley remains a priority for Adventist Health,” Bales-Chubb said. For example, the network recently recruited three physicians to Selma and upgraded its MRI in Reedley and is preparing to upgrade the electronic health record system throughout the network.
