Maker Movement Takes Over Fresno for First Time Ever

FRESNO – The Do-It-Yourself (DIY), Maker Movement sweeping the nation will soon hit Fresno – and a professional sports team – for the first time ever.

The Fresno Grizzlies have released a “Call for Makers” for the Fresno Ideaworks Mini Maker Faire at Chukchansi Park on Sunday, April 21. The “call” is to find makers from all over who are interested in bringing their projects, ranging from architecture and engineering to recycle and reuse and everything in between, to Fresno’s first Mini Maker Faire. The Fresno Ideaworks Mini Maker Faire will showcase these makers and their projects to learn and share with others throughout Chukchansi Park before and during the Grizzlies’ April 21 game.

Categories for makers the Grizzlies are looking for include:

·     Architecture/Engineering

·     Arts/Crafts

·     Technology and 3D

·     Homesteading/Sustainability

·     Alternate Era (Steampunk, Civil War, Renaissance, etc)

·     Science/Mathematics

·     Recycle/Reuse

·     Young Makers

The Fresno Ideaworks Mini Maker Faire, in conjunction with Make magazine, will be the first ever Mini Maker Faire in Fresno as well as the first Maker event sponsored by a professional sports team. Gates will open at 12 p.m. for the Fresno Ideaworks Mini Maker Faire. The event will take place during the Grizzlies game along Tulare Plaza and in the Tecate Cantina. A Grizzlies game ticket allows entry into the Fresno Ideaworks Mini Maker Faire.  The Grizzlies game on April 21 starts at 2:05 p.m. while the Fresno Ideaworks Mini Maker Faire will run from 12-5 p.m.

The maker movement defines the actions of millions of people who have begun to self-produce everyday items and creative projects. Makers embrace the DIY culture as well as solve problems and create their own path by using their passion to produce things.

Maker Faires and Mini Maker Faires are held all over the world each year, including 59 in 2012. The two flagship Maker Faires include the Maker Faire Bay Area and World Maker Faire New York. The Maker Faire Bay Area for 2013 will be held on May 18 and 19th in San Mateo, Calif.
