Kaweah Delta Named Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology

VISALIA – Kaweah Delta Medical Center has been designated as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the AAGL and Surgical Review Corporation. The AAGL promotes minimally invasive gynecologic surgery among surgeons worldwide. The designation follows an intensive on-site survey of multiple inpatient departments conducted earlier this year.

The COEMIG program sets standards for safety and quality of minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries. The program is designed to expand patient awareness of – and access to – minimally invasive gynecologic procedures performed by surgeons and facilities that have demonstrated excellence in these advanced techniques.

“This designation affirms our history of excellent gynecologic surgical outcomes,” said Mark Wiseman, MD FACOG, medical director of Minimally Invasive Gynecology of Kaweah Delta Health Care District. “Joining the other Center of Excellence gynecologic surgeons and hospitals worldwide will allow us to always provide the women we care for with the best surgical options available right here in the Central Valley.”

Benton Duckett, director of Surgical Services at Kaweah Delta, said the designation was also awarded because Kaweah Delta delivers the safest and highest-quality care to patients.   Facilities that receive the COEMIG designation demonstrate a commitment to consistently deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care. Among the many qualifications considered are the experience of the surgical staff, the status of the hospital’s technology and equipment, adherence to established clinical pathways for perioperative care, and the availability and competency of the support staff and surgical team members.

The COEMIG program recognizes that the integrated efforts and resources of both surgeons and the hospital are what provide lasting health benefits for minimally invasive gynecologic surgery patients. Benefits of minimally invasive surgery include decreased pain, less blood loss, faster recovery and, as a result, improved patient satisfaction. To earn the COEMIG designation, surgeons and hospitals must partner and demonstrate a cross-organizational commitment to minimally invasive gynecologic surgical care.

Dr. Wiseman said Kaweah Delta is committed to sharing surgical outcomes with other Center of Excellence hospitals and surgeons. “That will help ensure that we are providing patients state-of-the-art procedures with exceptional results. We already have impressive programs in gynecologic laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and robotic surgery,” Dr. Wiseman said.
