Garner Becomes Selma Chief of Police

SELMA – Gregory L. Garner was sworn in as the City of Selma’s 12th police chief at Abraham Lincoln Middle School on Monday.

“We are pleased to have someone with Greg’s skills and abilities right outside our door,” said Selma City Manager D-B Heusser.   “He was head and shoulders above the rest of the finalists.  Several key factors in his appointment included his leadership and problem solving skills, ability to work with diversity, and the fact that citizens, community leaders and faith based individuals have all praised his work and have outstanding things to say about him.”

Garner was selected after a statewide search was conducted to recruit the police chief position, a process which took many months to complete.  He is taking over a department of 45 sworn and non-sworn personnel with an operational budget of $5.1 million.  He previously spent more than three decades with the City of Fresno Police Department, and left with the title of captain, a position that he held for nearly 12 years.

Garner replaces Thomas H. Whiteside, who retired in July 2009.  In the interim period, Myron Dyck has served as interim chief.
