MADERA – Children’s Childhood Cancer Survivorship Program received a $250,000 boost thanks to a gift from Norman D. Jansen in memory of his wife, Vivian E. Jansen.

Jansen’s caregiver encouraged him to support Children’s, after her son experienced excellent care at the hospital. Mr. Jansen said his gift to the program suitably honors the memory of his late wife, who passed away from leukemia.

“This is a wonderful cause,” said Jansen. “My wife would have wanted it and this honors her memory. To survive cancer is heroic. Anything we can do toward research and to help these kids have a better life, I’m thrilled to be a part of.”

“Norman’s gift is and will continue to be a lasting testament in honor of Vivian,” said Jim Miller, vice president Foundation and chief development officer at Children’s. “An endowment gift of this magnitude will provide critical resources each and every year for this world class program benefiting hundreds of children annually.”

The gift will improve the quality of life for childhood cancer survivors by helping to support their treatment and education for childhood cancer survivors. The program educates, empowers and prepares survivors for adulthood to maintain their health as best as possible.

The program offers ongoing health management and follow-up, diagnostic testing and an individualized plan for each patient. Participants also discuss their future academic or career plans and learn strategies for success.

Jansen’s donation bolsters the $4 million goal established for the survivorship endowment. Children’s currently serves approximately 300 survivorship patients per year. Once the endowment is fully funded, the program can annually serve 1,000 patients.

Contributions to the Children’s Hospital Childhood Cancer Survivorship Program can be made by contacting the Foundation at (559) 353-7100.
