Surgery Service Helps Keep Families Informed

HANFORD/SELMAFamilies of same-day surgery patients in Hanford and Selma are now kept continuously informed about the status of their loved one.

Adventist Health’s new SurgiNet program provides electronic surgery progress updates on a status board in waiting rooms at Adventist Medical Centers in Hanford and Selma and at the KerrOutpatientCenter in Hanford. Families receive a card with a patient identification number that is linked with status updates such as “Pre-operation,” “Near Completion,” or “In Recovery.”

“This technology allows waiting families more peace-of-mind as they can follow along on their patient’s journey,” said Lori Ruffner, RN, Adventist Health / Central Valley Network director of Surgical Services. “It also allows for better coordination of same-day surgery patients, starting with registration and continuing until the patient goes home.”

“It’s nice to be able to see her progress,” said Kimberly Oviedo of Laton, Calif., as she watched the status board in the waiting room during her mother’s knee surgery at Adventist Medical Center – Hanford on Jan. 29. “I like that I can also see the times and how long she’s been in the operating room, too.”

The real-time electronic tracking board also helps surgery staff members better anticipate patients’ needs because they are kept up-to-date electronically, Ruffner added.
